James started kendo aged 19 at university and was lucky to learn from Ian Parker-Dodd and the then GB coach, Honda Sotaro sensei.
He travelled to Japan regularly to train with Honda sensei over the years and practice with the Fukuoka Tokuren more recently.
James runs Denshinkan dojo in Cardiff and also teaches at Akai Ryuu dojo and qualified as a national coach in 2020.
He has always strived to uphold the values of the BKA in both practice and competition and will continue to do so as long as he can hold a shinai!

Riku Biscomb
Riku Biscomb
Born in Tokyo and raised in London from the age of one, he began practicing Kendo at just four years old, training both in the UK and Japan. By sixteen, he was competing internationally, representing Great Britain at the 22nd European Kendo Championships (EKC) in Frankfurt, Germany. He went on to win individual bronze and team bronze medals at the 23rd EKC in Beauvais, France and later was a team member at the World Kendo Championships (WKC) in Milan, Italy.
He continues to deepen his practice through regular training in Japan, including time at the National Institute of Fitness and Sport in KANOYA, as well as training visits to Tsukuba, Keio, Fukuoka, and a local Tokyo dojo. A recent graduate in Sports Science from the University of Bath; he currently holds the rank of 3rd Dan.

Sayaka Zelewska
Name- Sayaka Zalewska
Sayaka began practicing Kendo at the age of 5, guided by her parents, who are both experienced Kendo instructors based in Kent. At 14, she started taking her training more seriously by attending squad practices, which marked the beginning of her competitive journey. Since then, Sayaka has traveled extensively across Europe and Japan — her mother’s home country — to participate in competitions and join regular training sessions, deepening both her skills and passion for Kendo.
She is currently a Kendo 2-dan, attending high school in Japan, where she continues to learn the Japanese language and culture while training in Kendo both inside and outside of school.

Rosie co-runs Denshinkan dojo in Cardiff with James and also teaches at Akai Ryuu dojo and is the women’s coach for kendo in Cardiff..
Rosie is the first GB woman to ever place for a top 2 medal at the European championships!
