Barry Straughan, Assistant Manager
Barry Straughan
Barry Straughan became interested in Kendo at a young age, after watching a family friend who had taken up in Kendo while working in Japan. This lead Barry, along with a father, to take up Kendo. Barry then went on to become a competitor for many years, both domestically and internationally. Aa a member of the Great Britain Kendo Team, Barry competed between 2004 – 2007 and 2010 – 2012, fighting in both the individual and team events at European and World Championships.
Since retiring from competition Kendo, Barry became an instructor in his home city of Newcastle Upon Tyne but has also continued to attend domestic competition as a referee. Then in 2021, Barry was asked to become Manager of the GB team. Between 2021 – 2023, Barry served as manager at two European Championships, at which the GB Team achieved great success with medals in both the senior and junior categories. Now in 2025, Barry has again become part of the GB Management team which he describes as “a great honour”
Barry brings a wealth of experience to the role and hopes that he can use his own successes and failures, to guide and support the GB Team to achieve the success they desire and deserve.Along with his great friend and colleague Dez Whitson (GB Team Manager), the inclusion of the wonderful new Coaching team (Mr Takanami and Mr Suto), and of course the wonderfully talented GB Kendo Squad, Barry feels that great success and achievement is on the horizon for the Great Britain Team.

Muneto Takanami Head Coach
Muneto Takanami
Muneto Takanami is a highly accomplished Kendo instructor and competitor, renowned for blending traditional Japanese Kendo with modern training methodologies. With a foundation rooted in Japan’s most respected Kendo institutions, Takanami has developed a unique approach that emphasises strategic thinking, ma-ai (distance control), and explosive power.
He began Kendo under the influence of his father, a former All Japan Championship competitor, and quickly established himself as a promising talent. As a young athlete, he won the Kyushu and West Japan Championships and secured third place in the National Championships. His competitive career continued at the prestigious National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Kanoya (NIFS), where he trained under elite instructors. He went on to compete in the All Japan Student Open Kendo Championship and trained with the Kumamoto Prefectural Police Kendo Team.
Takanami’s expertise extends well beyond competition. He is a specialist in the “Three-Step Training” (3段練習) method developed by Hanshi 9th Dan Yasunori Taniguchi and used by top-tier teams such as the Kanagawa Prefectural Police Tokuren. He incorporates video analysis and reaction time assessments to refine athlete performance and support development.
Internationally, Takanami has played a key role in advancing Kendo. He has coached and adapted training for the Great Britain national team, collaborated on research with UK universities, and worked with a Professor at the University of Hertfordshire to enhance athlete development through scientific performance analysis. He is also involved in organising global training exchanges and securing sponsorships to promote Kendo worldwide.
